At the Manitoba Museum

Today we went on a fieldtrip to the Manitoba Museum and Forks. 

We started by watching a show New Horizons in the planetarium. 

I really liked the 3D part when it was going fast like a rollercoaster. - Tessa

Then we walked through the Manitoba Museum in a self-guided tour

We saw the Nonsuch ship. It was a big ship that sailed in the Fur Trade - Angela

There was a room that was only as long as two desks put together. - Taylor

After lunch we walked to the forks and played on their new playstructure.

Youth Forum 2014 Wrap Up At the SJASD Youth Forum wrap-up on social justice and eco issues, we listened to student representatives share about projects their schools supported. We participated in an interactive activity showing statistics from the book, "If the World Were a Village." Our schools are making a difference in the environment, our communities and families locally and globally. Collectively, we raised over $100,000! Stevenson was involved in many projects throughout the year including being #1 school in our division for recycling and composting, Walking School Bus, Dream Factory, Phillipine Typhoon Relief, Winnipeg Harvest, Walking School Bus, We are Silent, Heart & Stroke Foundation, and Terry Fox Run. Here is a question we were asked: What is one cause/project your school /class supported that impacted you the most this year? How did it impact you? This is what Stevenson had to say: "I was impacted by seeing how many students care about my back pack project and all the donations I got from our school alone." "For me, it was Callie's backpacks for the homeless project. It's a good thing that she's making a change in the world. She doing a really great job and she's excited to see the looks on their faces!" "I was impacted by We Are Silent day. I got to see how hard it is to not have a voice." "For me, it was the We Are Silent day. I felt how hard it is to be like the girls who don't get to talk and are ignored." "As a staff member, I really enjoyed the Heart & Stroke Foundation campaign we supported. I was blown away by the school's fundraising over $9000. Healthy active lifestyle is important and I loved learning new dances. It was a lot of fun." What about you? We'd love to hear your responses and ideas you have for future projects. Together we make a difference. Congratulations Stevenson on a great year of awareness, projects and fundraising for important causes!

Evaluating Stain Fighting Products

We see a lot of commercials about stain removers and we wanted to see which one worked the best! We used the products OxyClean, Shout, Baking Soda, Club Soda and we also used plain water.

We made stains using mud, jello, grape juice, pasta sauce, and ink/marker. Materials for this experiment were the stain remover products, water, buckets/bins, fabric, 25 pieces of fabric to identify stain and stain remover once washed, safety pins , goggles, gloves, and we also used a washing machine to wash the fabric.

Steps:

1.We took the mud, jello, ink, grape juice and tomato sauce and stained all of them all equaly.

2.Then we let the stain dry overnight and  took off the extra mud after drying.

3.After that we took fabric and safety pins so we know which stain remover we used.

4.We took bins and placed the fabric in.

5.We wore our goggles and gloves then put the stain remover products on the pices of fabric.

6.We took a jug of water and filled the bin half way with the fabric in it we let it set for the 4 hours.

7.Then we put them in the washer and left it to dry over the night.

8.finally we took the fabric and looked which stain remover worked the best!

Conclusion

Most of the stain removers the stains lighter, but we felt that OxyClean cleaned most of the stains even though it still left marks from the mud stains. Nothing got mud out!  OxyClean it was still the best!

So don't let muddy clothes sit over night. They won't come clean!

We are proud of our classmates as they represent Stevenson at the Divisional Heritage Fair. Good work girls! 

Tango no Sekku

On May 5th we celebrated Tango no Sekku, which is Japanese Children's Day. This day initially celebrated boys but has become a holiday for all Children. We wanted this video about Tango no Sekko and then participated in various activities.

After watching the video we made Japanese Kabuto Helmets out of newspaper.

We also asked for families to share traditional children's games. One game that was brought in by our classmate Altea was a game called "Chinese Garter". In this game a garter (we used Holy Moly Straps from the gym) is strung between to people starting at their feet. Players jump over the garter and then the garter gets moved higher and higher until it's too high to jump over. Check out one of our classmate's great jumping here.

We also played with traditional Japanese games such as Kendama, Daruma Ototshi and made Oragami. This is one of our classmates playing Kendama.

It was a fun day!
